    • Most people would have screamed. Mrs Hathall made no sound. She had seen death many times, but she had never witnessed death by violence. Heavily, she plodded across the room and descended the stairs to where her son waited. "There's been an accident," she said. "Your wife's dead." Chief Inspector Wexford could discover no motive, no reason, no suspect. All he had were his own intuitive suspicions. Probably he was reading meaning where there was none; probably Angela Hathall really had picked up a stranger, and that stranger had killed her. But why such doubt? Is Wexford becoming cynical and untrusting? Or is this simply one of the most ingenious crimes he has ever tackled?

    • Despite multiple warnings, Horace B. Otis and his family move to Canterville Chase, a sprawling English manor with a dark history and a lingering guest. The Canterville Ghost is an irreverent mix of horror and humor. Canterville Chase is known for its troubled past, having been previously owned by Sir Simon de Canterville, who mysteriously disappeared after the murder of his wife. When the Otis family buys the property, they begin to notice a supernatural presence. However, unlike previous residents, they are more annoyed than afraid. Sir Simon's scare tactics fall flat, leading to a ghostly identity crisis. This entertaining story subverts the expectations of the horror genre, presenting a family-friendly tale with Gothic elements balanced by slapstick humor. Since its publication in 1887, The Canterville Ghost has been adapted across multiple mediums, showcasing its enduring appeal and versatility.

"Call me Ishmael" is one of literature's most famous opening lines. Originally published in 1851 with little acclaim, this work is now considered Herman Melville's masterpiece and often regarded as the Great American Novel. The narrative follows Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the great white whale, paralleling the biblical Job's quest for justice and Oedipus's search for truth. Ahab embodies the duality of virtuous and murderous impulses, representing the complexities of the human spirit. Melville's rich prose and the story's expansive scope evoke Shakespearean grandeur and symbolic depth. This work sets the standard for literary achievement in American literature. This edition serves as a companion to the Hallmark Entertainment television adaptation aired on USA Network. The Modern Library has significantly influenced American cultural life for nearly a century, originating in 1917 and later becoming part of Random House. It has offered affordable hard-bound editions of essential literary works. In celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary, the series was redesigned, reviving its classic emblem and enhancing its presentation. The Modern Library remains dedicated to providing readers with the finest literature at accessible prices.

A veces incluso moría.» .

    • "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," published in 1886, became a bestseller with 40,000 copies sold in six months. The story is inspired by the true tale of Deacon Brodie, an Edinburgh carpenter who led a secret double life and ultimately faced execution. Stevenson had previously written a play about this case as a teenager, titled "Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life." The impetus for the novella came from a vivid dream in late September or early October 1885, after which Stevenson quickly drafted a version. While recovering in Bournemouth, he experienced a health crisis just before the dream and wrote feverishly. His wife criticized the initial draft, prompting Stevenson to burn it and produce an allegorical second version within a week. The narrative combines various stylistic levels, with a distinct tone in the narrator's voice compared to the inserted documents, showcasing Stevenson's stylistic virtuosity, which needed to be faithfully preserved in translation.

This book looks at some of the great crimes of history - crimes like the Lindbergh kidnapping and the Mona Lisa robbery. It also looks at some great criminals, like the poisoner Dr Crippen. Most of these crimes were solved, but some, like the assassination of President Kennedy, still hold their mysteries.

What does the name " Agatha Christie " mean? To many people, it means a book about a murder mystery - a " whodunnit ". " I'm reading an Agatha Christie, " people say. " I'm not sure who the murderer is - I think it's . . . " But they are usually wrong, because it is not easy to guess the murderer's name before the end of the book. But who was Agatha Christie? What was she like? Was her life quiet and unexciting, or was it full of interest and adventure? Was there a mystery in her life, too?
