Autor, miał szesnaście lat, gdy w 1943 roku został wraz z rodziną osadzony w obozie w Sobiborze. Rodzice i młodszy brat zginęli w komorze gazowej, a on sam przetrwał koszmar, uczestnicząc w głośnym powstaniu więźniów. Po wojnie, na emigracji w USA, zaczął dokumentować zbrodnie hitlerowskie. O wszystkim opowiada we wstrząsającej, fabularyzowanej książce, opisującej nieludzką codzienność obozu w Sobiborze. Na jej kanwie powstał film Ucieczka z Sobiboru, nagrodzony Złotym Globem.
