Pour se faire une idée de sa qualité exceptionnelle, il est légitime de commencer par une version abrégée. Par bonheur il en existe une que Dickens avait lui-même établie en 1861, afin d'introduire David Copperfield dans le répertoire de ses lectures publiques d'extraits de ses œuvres : d'une part, l'enlèvement d'Emily par un ami de David et les conséquences tragiques de cet enlèvement ; d'autre part, l'amour et le mariage de David et Dora ; Dickens a puisé des éléments dans d'autres chapitres pour donner un aperçu plus représentatif de son vaste travail.
