V první knize začíná Kvothe vyprávět, či spíš diktovat Kronikáři, o svém dětství ve společnosti kočovných umělců, o děsivé smrti svých rodičů rukou bájných Čandrínů, o všem, co zažil jako sirotek v drsném přístavním městě Tarbeanu, prolezlém zločinem, a o těžkých začátcích na Univerzitě, vyučující magická umění, kde se chce dovědět co nejvíc o tajemných vrazích, kteří pro většinu rozumných, vzdělaných lidí vůbec neexistují... Děj knihy se rozvíjí pomalu, ale postupně strhne jako velká řeka, která slibuje moře s pořádným vlnobitím, a čtenář by chtěl hned, teď, číst dál a vědět, jak to dopadlo.
