Dospívající Griz žije spolu s rodiči a sourozenci na ostrově a za celý život se nesetkal ani s tolika lidmi, aby z nich bylo možné postavit dvě mužstva a zahrát si regulérní fotbalový zápas. Před několika generacemi totiž lidé až na pár výjimek ztratili schopnost mít děti, a tak teď civilizace leží v troskách a na celém světě přežívá jen několik izolovaných skupinek. Všechno se točí kolem získávání obživy a zásob na zimu, jen občas se Griz spolu s otcem a bratrem vydá na „vikinskou výpravu“ do okolí a v polorozpadlých, dávno opuštěných domech hledají potřebné nástroje a součástky i další užitečné věci, které se kdysi vyráběly. Monotónní život na ostrově však jednoho dne naruší příjezd záhadného cizince. Než se rodina vzpamatuje, odváží si jejich návštěvník řadu věcí, které mu nepatří, a spolu s nimi i jednoho z Grizových psů. Griz to tak ovšem nehodlá nechat a pustí se za zlodějem. Protože ačkoli ze světa už mnoho nezbývá, opravdový konec nastane až poté, co ztratíme naději a necháme to, co milujeme, napospas osudu.
