The death of Rhona Rosowicz brings her remaining family to the decaying Edinburgh mansion where she and her daughter Esme had lived a solitary life. Surrounded by people she hardly knows. Esme's behaviour excites attracts and infuriates her relations as their lives intertwine in the mode of a dance. Esme's growing friendship with her aunt's husband leads to forbidden fruits, and through him she discovers the existence of her Polish father whom she thought long dead. To escape the scandal, Esme goes to seek her father in Canada. There she meets a handsome RCAF officer and the mistakes of her forefathers begin to repeat themselves.
