Desde aquella vez que un mago misterioso le vendió un libro de magia, Coco adora la hechicería y las artes ocultas. Lamentablemente, bruja no se hace, se nace, así que se resigna a llevar una vida normal en el taller de sastrería de su madre. Fin. No, mentira: Todo cambia el día que llega al pueblo Qifrey, un joven pero talentoso mago que repara en el talento para dibujar de Coco. Cuando un desperfecto técnico hace que Qifrey deba realizar un hechizo a escondidas, Coco no puede evitar espiar y descubre una de las claves de la magia: se invoca a través de dibujos. Más tarde, tratando de emular lo que vio, se pone a copiar dibujos de su viejo libro misterioso, pero la cosa derrapa enseguida y tanto su casa como su madre terminan convertidas en piedra.
