Niels Henrik Abel fue un matemático noruego cuyas contribuciones pioneras en álgebra y teoría de funciones transformaron el campo para siempre. Es más célebre por su prueba concluyente que demostró la imposibilidad de resolver la ecuación general de quinto grado mediante radicales, un problema que había desconcertado a los matemáticos durante 250 años. Abel también desarrolló de forma independiente la teoría de grupos, un pilar de las matemáticas y la física modernas, e hizo profundas contribuciones a la teoría de las funciones elípticas y abelianas. Aunque en gran medida no fue reconocido durante su corta vida, su legado intelectual continúa inspirando y desafiando a los matemáticos siglos después.
