In zijn fijnzinnige dialogen en onvergetelijke karakaterbeschrijvingen roept Mahfoez, die vertig romans schreef, een gevoelig beeld van de Egyptische samenleving. In dit boek zijn enkele licht-surrealistische verhalen van de bekende Egyptische schrijver (Nobelprijs 1988) gebundeld. Vaak schept Mahfoez (1912) meer een realistisch-absurde sfeer, of hebben zijn hoofdfiguren lak aan sociale conventies en realiseren een droom. Hoewel Mahfoez deelnam aan de surrealistische beweging in het Midden-Oosten, onderhoudt hij ook in deze verhalen een stevige band met het door armoede verminkte bestaan van gewone mensen, bron van veel alledaagse waanzin in Egypte.
