Since time immemorial people have been using ribbons, either as a fastening or for decoration. Woven from costly silk or shot with gold thread, they are the "miniatures' of the world of silk, brocade and velvet textiles, using the same materials and techniques. In this publication, however, we devote ourselves to the most exquisite of all these narrow woven the luxury silk ribbon, its various styles and techniques that go with them. With over sixty companies set up in the 18th century, silk ribbon manufacture in Basic reached its peak in the mid 19th century, by which time it was using all the latest technologies of steam, water and electric power to drive the machinery.
