Prized through the ages for its splendor and its savage, sophisticated wit, The Metamorphoses is a masterpiece of Western culture--the first attempt to link all the Greek myths, before and after Homer, in a cohesive whole, to the Roman myths of Ovid's day. Horace Gregory, in this modern translation, turns his poetic gifts toward a deft reconstruction of Ovid's ancient themes, using contemporary idiom to bring today's reader all the ageless drama and psychological truths vividly intact. --From the book jacket
A Commentary on Book 1
The introductions to each elegy are succinct, readable and original, and take careful account of relevant modern discussions. The commentary is full of learned detail. McKeown's Ovid retains his lightness of touch, however, and poet and commentator share an interest in the wit arising from situation and word-play.
This collection of Ovid's poems deals with the whole spectrum of sexual desire, ranging from deeply emotional declarations of eternal devotion to flippant arguments for promiscuity. In the Amores, Ovid addresses himself in a series of elegies to Corinna, his beautiful, elusive mistress. The intimate and vulnerable nature of the poet revealed in these early poems vanishes in the notorious Art of Love, in which he provides a knowing and witty guide to sexual conquest - a work whose alleged obscenity led to Ovid's banishment from Rome in AD 8. This volume also includes the "Cures for Love," with instructions on how to terminate a love affair, and "On Facial Treatment for Ladies," an incomplete poem on the art of cosmetics. Seduction: a subtle art, a rite celebrated during the Renaissance with courts of love, but already sung by Ovid. With the woman free in her senses and feelings, how to conquer her? Where to cast one's nets? Compliments, promises, tears, kisses, boldness... All weapons are valid. Once the beloved is seduced, how to keep her? At the end of a game where the prize is pleasure, the refined lover has more than one string to his bow... As for the woman, it is up to her to maintain her eternal femininity, which is not the easiest task... Beyond artifice, art must govern love. An art in which Ovid is a master.
The modern, unacademic idiom of A.D. Melville's translation opens the way to a fresh understanding of Ovid's unique and elusive vision of reality.
