Autor gótských (Getica) a římských dějin (Romana), sepsaných kolem roku 550 n. l., stojí na pomezí mezi dvěma epochami. O jeho životních osudech není mnoho známo vyjma faktu, že se sám hrdě hlásil k příslušnosti ke germánskému kmeni Gótů. Jeho dějiny Gótů přinášejí mnoho unikátních informací o historii tohoto kmene a lze je zařadit po bok obdobných "národních historií" (např. Paula Ciacona či Řehoře z Toursu). Přes jistá omezení spočívající v množství smyšlenek a nepravd, které autor do díla vložil, se jedná o zásadní a nenahraditelný pramen ke zkoumání doby tzv. stěhování národů. V případě rané historie Gótů je Jordanes dokonce naším jediným narativním zdrojem. Oba spisy můžeme zároveň vnímat i jako neocenitelné očité svědectví o hluboké proměně světa, kultury i společnosti na sklonku římského starověku a nástupu evropského středověku.
