In Spring 2006, the first Dutch military personnel were deployed to Afghanistan, marking the beginning of a complex and risky mission in Uruzgan. Their responsibilities included establishing local governance and executing infrastructure projects, alongside engaging in significant combat. This duality placed immense pressure on both the soldiers and the small group of Dutch civilians involved. For the first time, an interview project was initiated to capture and publish the personal experiences of those deployed shortly after their mission's conclusion. The book reveals the harsh realities faced by these individuals, as junior officers candidly share how the deployment impacted their lives. Through direct and unfiltered interviews, readers are taken on a journey through the mission's emotional highs and lows. The narratives highlight the life of a soldier, detailing their joys, struggles, and the profound loss of comrades. This work encapsulates the challenges, disappointments, successes, and the enduring spirit of courage and camaraderie among the troops. Ultimately, it serves as a tribute to all Dutch personnel involved in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, especially in Uruzgan province.
