Autor předkládá historii válečného námořnictva, jež začalo válku v očekávání další bitvy u Jutska mezi mohutnými válečnými loďstvy, pokračovalo prvním nasazením letadlové lodi v dějinách a končilo zorganizováním doposud největší a nejsložitější společné operace, vyloděním spojeneckých expedičních sil na normandských plážích 6. června 1944. Druhý svazek končí potopením bitevní lodi Prince of Wales a bitevního křižníku Repulse.

Závěrečný svazek se zaměřuje na triumf Spojenců v poslední fázi konfliktu, z něhož Královské námořnictvo sice vyšlo vítězně, ale v němž Británie definitivně ztratila postavení „vládkyně moří“. Autor rozebírá problémy spojené s přípravou spojenecké invaze do západní Evropy včetně komplikací vyplývajících z charakteru některých vojenských představitelů, kteří se na operaci „Overlord“ podíleli. Líčí největší kombinovanou operaci v dějinách lidstva, přičemž pozornost věnuje především její námořní části, známé pod názvem operace „Neptun“, jejíž plán považuje za mistrovské dílo štábní práce.
