«La fenomenología no es una filosofía de escuela dedicada al cultivo de una tradición académica; tampoco una filosofía que quiera afirmar su vitalidad contribuyendo a cambiar el mundo -o sea, no es filosofía revolucionaria ni aspira a serlo-. Ella es más bien meditación, y meditación justamente sobre la crisis. (...) En esta radicalidad la fenomenología no tiene igual, y avanza por el camino contrario al que, con ingenuidad no advertida, pisa toda otra ciencia y filosofía. Los descubrimientos que en este camino se le ofrecen son múltiples, pero existe uno que reviste particular importancia, y por el que ambos corifeos, Husserl y Heidegger, han trabajado en común. Es el descubrimiento cartesiano esencial de nuestra época como un todo. (...) El esfuerzo por contraponer a este concepto fundamental de la Modernidad, puesto así al descubierto, otro camino, un camino que se busca..., eso es la fenomenología».

Esta colección de ensayos, considerada por muchos como la obra más importante de Jan Patočka, está formada por seis textos, escritos entre 1973 y 1975, y estrechamente vinculados a los ciclos de conferencias que Patočka se vio obligado a impartir de forma privada a causa de su apartamiento de la universidad tras la invasión soviética de 1968. La intención de Patočka al escribirlos era ofrecer una interpretación de su tiempo presente desde una comprensión filosófica de la historia basada, a su vez, en una clave antropológica de fundamentación fenomenológica. Por la correspondencia del propio Patočka, se sabe que estaban listos para su publicación desde mayo de 1975. Sin embargo, tras su muerte en 1977, los textos no se localizaron, por lo que las primeras ediciones de los «Ensayos» se hicieron a partir de las notas y transcripciones de los asistentes a los mencionados ciclos de conferencias. En 2005, de forma casual, se localizó el texto redactado por Patočka, que había estado oculto hasta ese momento, realizándose una nueva edición en checo en 2007, que es la que se ha tomado de referencia para esta nueva traducción al castellano de la obra, la primera que se hace a partir del texto definitivo

První svazek Patočkových sebraných spisů. Soubor statí a přednášek o postavení člověka ve světě a v dějinách. První díl obsahuje stati z let 1929-1952 a nevydané texty z padesátych let.

Sv. 7: Druhý díl Fenomenologických spisů zahrnuje fenomenologické texty, které Jan Patočka uveřejnil doma či v zahraničí po roce 1949. Vzhledem k tomu, že se v padesátých letech zabýval převážně studiem a vydáváním díla J. A. Komenského, pochází první velká práce tohoto svazku až z roku 1965. Svazek tedy obsahuje pozdní autorovu fenomenologickou tvorbu a představuje ústřední část celých Sebraných spisů.

Svazek zahrnuje Patočkovy studie tematizující trojí povahu filosofické meditace soustředěné k uměleckému dílu: ve vztahu k širšímu celku vzdělanosti, ve vtahu k mýtu, ve vztahu k problému otevírajícího se smyslu, resp. pohybu lidské existence (prolomení do svobody jako otevřenosti).
