Úchvatný příběh největšího českého polárníka, velkého cestovatele, malíře, topografa a dobrodruha, velitele rakousko-uherské polární expedice a objevitele země Františka Josefa, jak jej sám sepsal. Dobrodružství zachycující rakousko-uherskou expedici do Arktidy v letech 1872–1874. Osudy dvaceti čtyř mužů ( z toho pěti Čechů), kteří objevili a prozkoumali nejsevernější souostroví na východní polokouli, zemi Františka Josefa, a jimž se před smrtí hladem a zimou podařilo uniknout teprve po vysilující tříměsíční cestě rozmrzajícím mořem. Nejen milovníci polárních cestopisů si četbou této knihy přijdou na své, a to i díky skvělým Payerovým ilustracím. Český překlad jeho monumentálního díla z roku 1876 obsahuje popis expedice z let 1872–1874, řadu autorových postřehů o životě ledních medvědů i některé zajímavé příhody z německé polární expedice v letech 1869–1870. Překladatel doplnil autorův text popisem mnohých předcházejících i pozdějších výprav do oblastí kolem severního pólu, životopisnými, zeměpisnými, geologickými i dalšími přírodovědeckými poznámkami a podrobným popisem země Františka Josefa podle tehdy dostupných pramenů.
