Marcus Tullius Cicero (3 January 106 BC - 7 December 43 BC) was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer and philosopher, who served as consul in the year 63 BC. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. His influence on the Latin language was immense: it has been said that subsequent prose was either a reaction against or a return to his style, not only in Latin but in European languages up to the 19th century. Kniha římského polyhistorika Plinia Staršího Naturalis historia je rozsáhlým encyklopedickým dílem: zahrnuje anthropologii, živočichopis a rostlinopis, nauku o lécích a lékařství a nerostopis. K tomu je připojen výklad o různých oborech výtvarného umění. Zejména poslední kapitoly, jednající o starověkém umění, jsou kulturně velmi cenné, protože jsou bohatým zdrojem zpráv o starověké umělecké technice a o nesčetných uměleckých dílech, z nichž převážná většina je navždy ztracena.
Plínius Starší pôsobil ako vojak, úradník či radca samotného cisára. Precestoval podstatnú časť rímskeho sveta a vyznal sa v ňom do najmenších podrobností. V Histórii prírody vďaka tomu zachytil podstatnú časť dobového rímskeho poznania. Dodnes tak môžeme nahliadnuť do vedomostí a predstáv Rimanov o vesmíre, medicíne, geografii, zoológii, botanike, ale aj maliarstve, sochárstve či staviteľstve. Kniha prináša prvý slovenský preklad tohto monumentu európskej kultúry a neopakovateľným spôsobom umožňuje dotknúť sa rímskeho života aj v našom jazyku.
