Polymers are gaining ever-growing importance in medical research and development, both for their material properties and as conjugates. Although the development of novel materials and applications continues, the focus of research has shifted to the mechanisms of action and interaction of the new materials. This recent understanding has enabled scientists to design and tailor the properties of their products for increasingly specific purposes. 'Polymers in Medicine' was the title of the 40th Microsymposium of the Prague Meetings on Macromolecules. It brought together experts from academia and industry to discuss the application of polymers to biomedical science. This volume of Macromolecular Symposia presents many of the lectures from the meeting and offers an excellent overview of current research in this field.

This conference on the Rheology of Polymer Systems was held at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague from 19-22nd July 1999, as part of the Prague Meetings on Macromolecules sponsored, as usual, by IUPAC. The topics covered included relations between rheological properties and structure of molten polymer systems, advanced rheometry and rheological characterization, interrelations between rheological data measured in various flow fields and progress in the description of complex flow of molten polymer systems. The papers within this volume of Macromolecular Symposia cover a broad range of topics typical of the symposium.
The conference has provided a forum for both academia and industry experts in the mechanical behaviour of solid polymers, both synthetic and natural. Special emphasis will be put on structural understanding of macroscopic mechanical behaviour.
Since polymers contribute a large volume to the waste streams they have become a particular source of concern with regard to environmental protection. This volume is devoted to the recycling of polmyers either by reusing them directly or by recovering their chemical or energy content.
This book contains selected contributions of the symposium „Surface and Interfacial Phenomena in Macromolecular Systens“, 17th Discussion Conference of the Prague Meeting on Macromolecules, presenting developments and concepts in the field of surface and interfacial phenomena in macromolecular systems. The emphasis was put on the behaviour of polymer chains in surface and interfacial layers, the methods of studying these layers in polymer systems, and influence of interfacial phenomena on the properties of multiphase polymer blends.
