Door een reeks toevalligheden ontpopt Mark zich, samen met zijn collega en mentor Giles, tot een zeer deskundige schade-expert met een scherp oog voor bedrog. Mark en Giles worden naar een dorp gestuurd waar een vuilverbrandingsoven voor een verhoogde sterfte aan kanker zou zorgen. De verzekeringsmaatschappij wordt geconfronteerd met een potentiële claim die zeer verstrekkende maatschappelijke en financiële gevolgen zou hebben. Al snel blijkt de zaak veel complexer te zijn dan aanvankelijk werd gedacht. Marks aanwezigheid in de gesloten dorpsgemeenschap zal leiden tot onrust en verdeeldheid. Wanneer hij ook nog eens verliefd wordt op één van de actievoersters, een alleenstaande moeder, maakt dat de zaak er zeker niet gemakkelijker op.
