Nach ersten Erfolgen im Impressionistenkreis brach er mit Vincent van Gogh und begab sich, als private Schwierigkeiten ihn unruhig machten, auf ein umherziehendes Leben, das ihn zunächst durch Europa und schließlich auf der Suche nach ursprünglicher Originalität und unverdorbener Natur nach Tahiti führte. Die in dieser Zeit bis zu seinem Tod 1903 entstandenen Gemälde brachten ihm posthumen Ruhm. In Bildern, die jeglichen Versuch vermeiden, den Lebensstil der primitiven Inselvölker romantisch zu verschleiern, konnte Gauguin die magische Wirkung vermitteln, die sowohl die Landschaften als auch das Leben der Ureinwohner – ihre Körpersprache, ihren Charme und ihre Schönheit – auf ihn hatten. Müde von seinem Ruf als Südsee-Maler beschloss Gauguin schließlich, nach Frankreich zurückzukehren, starb jedoch an Syphilis auf den Marquesas-Inseln vor seiner Abreise.
