First published in 1934, and reissued in 2013, In The Cairngorms is Nan Shepherd's only book of poems. Although she wrote three acclaimed novels, and a remarkable prose meditation on the Cairngorms The Living Mountain. Shepherd considered her poetry to have been her finest work. This new edition adds 12 poems which were discovered during research for the Shepherd biography 'Into the Mountain', all of which are very much of the same quality as the works in the original volume. The new hardback edition is printed in 2 colours on a premium paper and will be a must for every Nan Shepherd fan.

It will come as a very pleasant surprise to Nan Shepherd's growing following that there is a body of her work which has never been published in book form, and indeed will be entirely unknown outside a very small circle. The editor of this volume, Charlotte Peacock, found many of these gems when researching for the Nan Shepherd biography Into the Mountain, published by Galileo in 2017. The pieces that Peacock found include a brilliant and moving 10,000 word short story, "Descent from the Cross"; a series of 'field writings' which were written at the same time, and in the same style as, The Living Mountain; 15 poems, never seen before; a highly entertaining piece on the poetry of Hugh MacDiarmid and, from where the title of this collection arises, a haunting description of "Wild Geese in Glen Callater" a version of which also went into The Living Mountain.

Nan Shepherd's star continues to rise, year on year, and her meditation on the Cairngorms, The Living Mountain, has established itself as an all time classic of nature literature. Selected Prose and Poetry of Nan Shepherd brings together the two Galileo books, In the Cairngorms (the poetry) and Wild Geese (A novella, 'The Descent of Man,' and a collection of prose pieces, some biographical, some general). Both books will continue to be available separately in trade paperback editions, but this beautiful hardback, with illustrations taken from the first edition (1977 Aberdeen University Press) of The Living Mountain, will make a superb gift edition of a very important section of her work. Her poetry was said to be her most cherished achievement, and the novella in this collection is absolutely of the same quality of the three novels which originally gave birth to her literary reputation long before the publication of The Living Mountain.
