Schneede, dem Kurator der Ausstellung. Das Buch ermöglicht einen neuen Blick auf die Komplexität der Bildwelt Richters, in der sich das Banale und das Böse begegnen: die Träume und die Sehnsüchte der Zeit, wie die schnellen Autos und das neue Reisen, die persönlichen Erinnerungen, die beklemmende Vergangenheit, die aktuelle Politik und die trivialen, gleichwohl vielsagenden Gebrauchsgegenstände des Alltags. Zum Verständnis der Erinnerungsqualität der Bilder aus den 60er Jahren ist der Zyklus '18. Oktober 1977' (1988) zum Tod der RAF-Mitglieder von zentraler Bedeutung. Mit der intensiven Beschäftigung mit diesem Ereignis schließt Richter die Werkgruppe der Gemälde nach Fotos ab. Der Zyklus, der als Leihgabe des New Yorker MoMA für die Ausstellung ins Bucerius Kunst Forum nach Hamburg kommt, erfährt eine neue Interpretation und Verortung im Werk Richters.
