In einer vollständigen Neufassung der 1969 erstmals erschienenen »Wortbildung« von W. Fleischers wird eine umfassende Darstellung der Wortbildungsmodelle in der deutschen Gegenwartssprache geboten. Die theoretische und methodische Grundlage wurde erweitert und vertieft. Die qualitativen und quantitativen Merkmale der Wortbildung bei Substantiven, Adjektiven, Adverbien und Verben werden detailliert analysiert. Im Fokus steht das Prinzip der synchronen Beschreibung des gegenwärtigen Systems, wobei auch unproduktive Modelle, die im heutigen Wortschatz vertreten sind, behandelt werden. Eine Reihe von Grundfragen wurde neu entschieden, und es wurden neue Aspekte wie onomasiologisch-nominationstheoretische Orientierung sowie die Beziehung zum Text und die Problematik des Wortbildungsparadigmas aufgenommen. Die Beschreibung der verbalen Wortbildung wurde erheblich erweitert, während die Darstellungen von Substantiv und Adjektiv differenziert sind. Stilistische Aspekte finden ebenfalls Berücksichtigung.
