Letters From Groucho Marx To His Daughter Miriam

For everyone who still can't get enough of this legendary wit (and excellent writer), here is an extraordinary collection of almost two hundred letters by Groucho Marx. Following a close filial relationship as it unfolds week by week, year by year, these letters move through three decades of from the vagaries of Groucho's career in film, radio, and television, through two divorces and two remarriages, to Miriam's own often tumultuous young adulthood. In his own inimitable fashion, Groucho advises his daughter about her schoolwork, writing, career, growing up, and growing old. He also discusses theater, film, books, and politics with a candor that will surprise and delight even his most knowledgeable fans. Accompanied by photographs from Miriam's personal albums, Love, Groucho reveals a man deeply concerned with his family, a sometimes firm, always loving father who never hesitated to say exactly what he thought.

Groucho Marx may be the funniest man who ever lived. Here in one volume are the classics of Marxian mayhem: excerpts from the scripts of the immortal movies, passages from his books, his articles for magazines ranging from The New Yorker to the Saturday Evening Post , the choicest ad-libs and quips from his long-running game show, You Bet Your Life , and selected letters, including his classic correspondence with T. S. Eliot. It's all here-the finest and funniest work by this century's most influential comedian, that man of whom Woody Allen said, "He is simply unique in the same way Picasso and Stravinsky are, and I believe his outrageous, unsentimental disregard for order will be equally funny a thousand years from now. In addition to all this, he makes me laugh." In the words of Groucho Marx: One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he go in my pajamas I don't know. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

In Memoirs of a Mangy Lover Groucho turns his manic eyebrows and spirited cigar to the ever-perplexing affairs of the heart while fully addressing the Marxian passion for poker. This wacky, eclectic book includes Groucho's improbable tales of true romance; his irreverent observations on talent, luck, and what this country really needs; the battles with pigeons and hotel detectives; an account of a blind date who knew a comedy when she saw it (even if it was Death of a Salesman); the "reason" for Harpo's silence; Groucho's unnatural history of love, which traces its unruly evolution from amoeba to alimony; his view on polygamy (and how to attain it); the stunning parallels between Groucho and Lawrence of Arabia; and, of course, plenty of blondes, brunettes, and redheads. So why buy a duck, when instead you can own the Memoirs of a Mangy Lover?
