Albrecht Unsölds "Neuer Kosmos" erschien 1967 und bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die Astronomie, insbesondere im Hinblick auf erdgebundene Großteleskope. Der Titel, inspiriert von Alexander von Humboldts "Kosmos", zielt darauf ab, einem breiten Publikum das neue Bild des Universums näherzubringen und die Grundgedanken der astronomischen Forschung in sachlichen und historischen Kontexten darzustellen. In den verschiedenen Auflagen werden bedeutende Entdeckungen und Ereignisse hervorgehoben, wie die zahlreichen neuen Kleinplaneten jenseits der Neptunbahnen, der Kometeneinsturz auf Jupiter sowie die hellen Kometen Hyakutake und Hale-Bopp. Zudem werden Fortschritte in der Sonnenseismologie und die Auflösung feinster Strukturen in Sternentstehungsgebieten und planetarischen Nebeln thematisiert. Auch die Evidenz für schwarze Löcher im Zentrum unserer Milchstraße und in anderen Galaxien sowie die Beobachtung entfernter Supernovaexplosionen und die Diskussion um eine kosmologische Konstante werden behandelt. Die dritte Auflage wurde zunehmend von B. Baschek bearbeitet. Albrecht Unsöld, ein Pionier der Physik der Sternatmosphären und Altmeister der Astrophysik, verstarb 1995 im Alter von 90 Jahren.
