First published in English in 1980, this important early memoir of Gustav Mahler is by Natalie Bauer-Lechner (1858-1921), a viola player and close and devoted friend of Mahler until his marriage to Alma Schindler in 1902.
The Austrian violist Natalie Bauer-Lechner was a good friend of the Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler. From her diary, she has selected recollections of Mahler from the period between 1890 and 1902. They offer a detailed insight into the person Gustav Mahler and what his thoughts, intentions and motivations have been in his two professions. Musicologically very interesting.
