Am 26. August 1768 stach Cook mit dem umgebauten Kohlenfrachter 'Endeavour' in See, um astronomische Beobachtungen auf Tahiti vorzunehmen und den unbekannten 'Südkontinent' zu erkunden. Nach drei Monaten auf Tahiti, wo er das Leben der Eingeborenen und die Flora und Fauna studierte, kartographierte er die umliegenden Inseln, die er 'Gesellschaftsinseln' nannte, und stellte fest, dass Neuseeland aus zwei Hauptinseln bestand, was die Existenz des 'Südlands' widerlegte. Seine Reise führte ihn weiter an die Ostküste Australiens und nach Batavia (Djakarta), bevor er 1771 nach England zurückkehrte. Zwischen 1772 und 1775 überquerte er zweimal den südlichen Polarkreis und erreichte viele entlegene Gebiete, darunter die Osterinseln und Kap Hoorn. 1776 brach er zu seiner dritten Expedition auf, um die nördliche Durchfahrt zwischen Pazifik und Atlantik zu erkunden. Dabei entdeckte er die Sandwich-Inseln, das heutige Hawaii. Nach der Ankunft an der Westküste Nordamerikas und einem misslungenen Versuch, ins Nordpolarmeer vorzudringen, erreichte er am 26. November 1778 Hawaii. Ein Vorfall mit den Eingeborenen führte zu seinem Tod. Cook war der erste Seefahrer, der so umfangreiche Reisen unternahm und mit neuem Wissen über den Pazifischen Ozean zurückkehrte. Seine Reisen sind von epochaler Bedeutung und lassen sich nur mit den Fahrten Kolumbus' vergleichen.

Dnes přitažlivý pro exotickou dovolenou, před téměř čtvrt tisíciletím objevený kapitánem Wallisem (v roce 1767 na lodi Delfín) a od té doby znovu a znovu navštěvovaný nejen slavnými mořeplavci. Deník kapitána Cooka „klipovým“ způsobem prozrazuje, co viděl a zažil, co ho překvapilo a co dokonce přineslo konflikty. Dozvíte se o přátelskosti domorodců k námořníkům, ale i obsahu jejich kapes, o jídle, které pomocí výměnného obchodu námořníci získávali, kterým rozšířili svůj jídelníček a díky kterému dokonce začali příznivě pohlížet na dříve opovrhovaný pokrm. Poznáte sport a zábavu domorodců, obřadní ceremonie vůči živým i mrtvým, způsoby krášlení, které dnes částečně kopíruje celý svět, ruční výrobu unikátní látky a mnohé jiné. Původní vydavatel pomocí srovnání s jinými deníky na několika místech textu komentuje nebo upřesňuje Cookovy údaje.

Deník, v němž anglický mořeplavec a objevitel James Cook zachytil zážitky a zkušenosti z první objevitelské cesty kolem světa. Plavba trvala Cookovi celkem tři roky a jejím cílem bylo pozorovat na Tahiti průchod Venuše roku 1769.
