Dit is het verhaal van een vampier, een jager die nu zelf wordt opgejaagd door voortdurende veranderingen in zijn psychische make-up. De jager in het verhaal is de (schijnbaar) onsterfelijke doctor Edward Weyland, antropoloog en etnograaf. Zijn specialiteit is het analyseren van dromen. Zijn ware aard dwingt hem echter met vaste regelmaat tot intieme betrekkingen met collega's en studenten, die hem eerst bewonderen en vervolgens zijn slachtoffer worden.
