Die internationale Sicherheitsforschungskonferenz „Future Security“ des Fraunhofer-Verbundes für Verteidigungs- und Sicherheitsforschung öffnet unter der Schirmherrschaft des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) am 30. September und 1. Oktober zum 4. Mal seine Tore in Karlsruhe. Aktuelle Ergebnisse aus Forschung und Entwicklung innerhalb folgender Schwerpunkte werden von den Experten vorgestellt und diskutiert; -Schutz kritischer Infrastrukturen-Sicherung von Warenketten-Sicherheit und Schutz von Bürgern-Sensorsysteme/Detektion von CBRNE-GefahrstoffenIn einer Podiumsdiskussion werden internationale Experten über die Zukunft der Sicherheitsforschung in Europa diskutieren und die gesellschaftlichen Aspekte der Sicherheitsforschung beleuchten.

Completely new textile technologies have recently been developed with the goal of giving additional functionality to garments. Textiles have been improved to protect against UV radiation and toxic gases or to enhance breathability. In addition, they may have integrated sensors to diagnose medical conditions or may be equipped with carrier molecules to absorb substances from the skin and release therapeutic compounds. At the same time, the awareness of unwanted effects clothing may have on human health has increased. This volume familiarizes the dermatologist, allergologist and occupational physician with what he should know about textiles, and, on the other hand, the textile or chemical engineer with what he should know about the human skin. Further, it is divided into two parts the first of which discusses the functionality of textiles also in medicine, for instance in the prevention of skin infections or wound healing. The last part deals with allergic contact and irritant dermatitis and the risks of possible exposure to hazardous chemical residues in textiles. For the first time the knowledge of textile engineers and dermatologists has been brought together to stimulate a promising interchange.

Together with the 6th Amendment to the Cosmetic Directive, it marked the first time that special efficacy claims could be legally made for cosmetic products, contingent upon providing evidence for these claims. This introduced a new independent "safety assessor," enhancing reliable marketing and ensuring transparency in proof, thereby protecting consumer health. Such claims necessitate high standards in scientifically based methodologies to substantiate them. The 6th Amendment also imposes strict restrictions on the use of conventional animal testing for cosmetic products and their ingredients, particularly for finished products. This creates a tension between the need to safeguard consumer health and the ethical considerations surrounding animal protection, as outlined in Council Directive 86/609 EEC. However, current knowledge indicates that human testing cannot entirely replace animal testing in all cases. Ethical concerns, along with a lack of understanding of the biological processes behind observed effects, often hinder suitable experimental methodologies, making it challenging to conduct human tests.

Non-invasive bioengineering techniques have become indispensable tools both in the development of drugs and cosmetics and in clinical dermatology. These techniques enable researchers to study the structure and function of human skin objectively and quantitatively. Recent technological developments have brought new techniques into the laboratory and the hospital, among them magnetic resonance imaging, optical coherence tomography and microdialysis. This book describes these state-of-the-art developments, details the application of skin bioengineering techniques for clinical purposes, shows their use in the testing of pharmaceutics and cosmetics and provides an overview of the design and legal aspects of skin bioengineering testing. It will be essential reading for dermatologists, cosmetologists, pharmacologists and toxicologists.

All aspects of both irritant, and allergic contact dermatitis prevention are covered in this volume. The epidemiological basis of the disease is examined, as is the targeting of risk groups, secondary prevention, and the prediction of irritancy and allergenicity by modern techniques.

Die Analyse aus der Schriftenreihe „Energiesysteme der Zukunft“ zeigt Möglichkeiten auf, wie das System gestaltet werden kann. Mehr als 100 Experten aus Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft haben ihre Expertise eingebracht. Wind- und Photovoltaikstrom schwanken in Abhängigkeit vom Wetter. Sogenannte Flexibilitätstechnologien müssen solche Schwankungen ausgleichen. Pumpspeicherkraftwerke leisten heute schon einen Beitrag zur Systemstabilität. Künftig können aber auch Batterien von Elektroautos dann aufgeladen werden, wenn es einen Stromüberschuss gibt. Über längere Zeiträume ließe sich Strom durch die Umwandlung in Wasserstoff oder synthetisches Erdgas speichern. Flexible Kraftwerke können mit Biogas oder Erdwärme betrieben werden und auch die Solarthermie ist in Kombination mit Wärmespeichern eine Alternative. Wovon also hängt es ab, welche Flexibilitätstechnologien in welchem Umfang zum Einsatz kommen? Welche politisch-gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen beeinflussen die Zusammensetzung des Stromversorgungssystems und welche Kosten sind damit jeweils verbunden? Die Analyse gibt Antworten auf diese Fragen und stellt verschiedene Optionen für eine emissionsarme Stromversorgung im Jahr 2050 vor.
