An exciting trend in B-cell biology is the growing recognition of the importance of natural antibodies to immune defence. B-1 cells are a substantial source of natural antibodies. This workshop brought together many of the leading people in this field to discuss the current status of B-1 cells, their developmental origin and their function. This field is still in its infancy and there is not yet universal agreement on how to define natural antibodies or B-1 cells. Many of the papers in this book address these issues. The association of B-1 cells and natural antibody producing cells to B-cell neoplasia are increasing. These are potentially important issues because of the increasing incidence of B-cell tumors in humans.

The papers in this collection were presented at the 14th Mechanisms in B-cell Neoplasia meeting held in Bethesda, Maryland, from October 21-23, 1996. The organizers decided to change the meeting format to focus on specific topics relevant to B-cell neoplasia, with this year's theme centered on the c-myc oncogene, a recurring subject in previous meetings. Several presentations revealed significant advances in understanding c-myc, highlighting the complexity of the topic, which warranted dedicated discussion. While the book reviews various aspects of the myc issue, it does not claim to be comprehensive. A recent Medline search revealed 8,505 references to myc, underscoring the field's extensive interest and depth. The meeting organizers contributed review chapters summarizing different facets of the discussions. Appreciation is extended to the National Cancer Institute for sponsoring the workshop and to Cygnus, Inc. for their exceptional organizational support. Special thanks are also given to Vickie Rogers for her efforts in compiling and editing the manuscripts.

This issue of Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology records the proceedings of a Workshop on the Immunology of Sili cones held at the Natcher Conference Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, March 13 and 14, 1995. A large num ber of investigators from North America and Europe met to discuss available data on how the immune system responds to silicones and related materials. Some aspects of this field are controversial. Nonetheless, the meeting was marked by a civil and open ex change of scientific information and divergent interpretations, re flecting the traditions of scientific communication. Each invited participant was asked to submit an article sum marizing his/her presentation. Most of the papers are published as submitted, with only editorial changes to conform with the guide lines given to each contributor or revisions to clarify aspects of the paper. The papers should not be regarded as peer-reviewed publi cations. This preface will attempt to outline some of the immu nological areas of investigation relating to silicones.
