Dieses Werk ist eine Neubearbeitung des 1996 erschienenen Buches „Ameisen - beobachten und bestimmen“. Es wurden umfangreichere Ergänzungen insbesondere im speziellen Teil vorgenommen, der Bestimmungsschlüssel unter Einbeziehung weiterer Arten und geographischer Regionen vollständig überarbeitet und aktualisiert. Dabei versuchte der Autor erfolgreich, kompliziertes Spezialwissen und aufwendige Determinationssysteme so darzustellen, dass sie auch durch Nichtspezialisten nutzbar werden.
