Philip Agee pracoval dvanáct roků v aparátu americké CIA - Ústřední zpravodajské služby - a vystřídal tři hlavní působiště: Ekvádor, Uruguay a Mexiko, kde organizoval podvratné akce. Ve své knize popisuje organizační strukturu CIA, funkční mechaniku činnosti jejího aparátu, způsoby všeobecné a odborné přípravy a podává zasvěcený pohled na situaci řady latinskoamerických zemí. Autor postupně dospěl k poznání, že CIA pod záminkou "obrany proti komunistické expanzi" zabezpečuje stále vyšší zisky amerických monopolů na úkor lidových mas jiných zemí. Proto se roku 1969 rozchází se CIA a ukrývá se v Mexico City, Paříži, Havaně a Londýně. Po vydání knihy v Anglii - byla mezitím přeložena do 12 jazyků - je Agee v červnu 1977 vypovězen a odchází do Holandska. V roce 1978 byl čestným hostem XI. světového festivalu mládeže a studenstva v Havaně.
