These are interesting photographs, new to most American eyes: a record of Almasy's ethnographically fascinating view into prewar Third World settings in South America, Africa, and the Near East as well as mid-century Europe. His austere, formal approach includes many canted compositions and overhead viewpoints. While the quality and selection of the photos are excellent, it takes some work to find the English captions to specific images (the text is bilingual), and the short introductory essays are somewhat clumsily translated from the original German.
