Der Titel dieses Buches ist doppeldeutig. Einerseits klingt die Stille selbst; um mit Cage zu sprechen – „there is no such thing as silence“. Andererseits brauchen Klänge ihr Gegenteil, die Stille. Auch wenn es keine absolute Stille gibt, weckt jeder Sound eine Vorstellung von Stille: Es gibt keine Präsenz ohne Absenz, keine Anwesenheit ohne Abwesenheit. Die doppelte Bedeutung des Titels Sounds Like Silence berührt zentrale Fragen: Was hören wir, wenn es nichts zu hören gibt? Wie stark ist unser persönliche Bedürfnis nach Stille? Und wie viel Stille können wir ertragen – angenommen, es gibt überhaupt so etwas wie Stille? John Cages 4'33" (vier Minuten, 33 Sekunden) wurde am 29. August 1952 uraufgeführt. Das Buch enthält neue theoretische Essays und künstlerische Arbeiten, die sich auf diese bahnbrechende Arbeit beziehen, alle Originalversionen der Notationen von 4'33'' sowie alle Variationen, Ableitungen und Fortschreibungen des „stillen Stücks“, die der Komponist zwischen 1962 und 1992 verfasst hat.

Eigentlich wussten wir es schon immer: Clowns sind böse. Spätestens seit den frühen 1980er-Jahren wurde die Clownsfigur sukzessive vom Horrorfilm annektiert. Seither treibt der Clown in Filmen wie Halloween (1982), Batman (1989) oder Stephen Kings Es (1990) sein Unwesen. In den letzten Jahren hat die Figur eine wahre Renaissance erlebt: in der Literatur, in Horror- und Hollywoodfilmen, in der Werbung, in Fernsehserien, im politischen Aktivismus, in der Popmusik und in der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Das Buch trägt diesem Umstand Rechnung und widmet sich erstmals ausführlich der „unheimlichen“ Karriere der Clownsfigur. Mit dem US-amerikanischen Kulturwissenschaftler Mark Dery konnte zudem einer der weltweit besten Kenner der Figur des bösen Clowns als Co-Autor gewonnen werden. Ausstellungsdaten 22. April – 26. - Published to mark the 40th anniversary of the Slovenian artists' collective This volume is published to mark the 40th anniversary of the artists' collective Rrose Irwin Sélavy and to accompany the exhibition at HMKV Dortmund. Since 1983, IRWIN has been investigating the art history of Eastern Europe, especially the ambivalent legacy of the historical avant-garde and its totalitarian successors, i.e. the dialectic of avant-garde and totalitarianism. Since the 1990s, the focus of the group has been on challenging the art history of "Western Modernism" in a critical and iconoclastic way. The artists playfully and darkly contrast it with the "retro avant-garde" and an "Eastern Modernism". The book, which can be read from both sides, is made up of two parts: the first chapter explores the black humor that is a consistent element in IRWIN's work. The second chapter examines issues relating to the state - and how IRWIN uses them to comment on current topics such as migration. Text in English and German.

This multinational collaboration focuses on the cultural and ecological significance of the polar regions, which have recently proved controversial as nations compete for use of the terrain. This volume recruits media artists to propose communications systems and an eco-friendly research station for the Arctic. Scheduled to run over a period of years, it involves workshops, fieldwork, publications and exhibitions.
