"The Robber Bridegroom" tells the hilariously absurd love story of the beautiful Rosamond and the robber Jamie Lockhart. Eudora Welty's novel takes a wildly imaginative turn in the realm of fantasy. Three travelers stay at an inn along the Mississippi and share a bed. The next morning, one of them mistakes his companions for ghosts and leaps out of the window. "We'll never see him again," remarks the blonde Jamie Lockhart, pondering how to divide the gold pieces of the vanished bedfellow. The tobacco planter Clement then invites Jamie to his home for the following Sunday evening. On that very day, Clement's daughter, the lovely Rosamond, is seduced by a robber with a face blackened by soot. Her father entrusts his new friend Jamie with the task of avenging this wrongdoing.
