London, April 1928: The Crystal Palace is set in a park perfect for family outings and the Honourable Daisy Dalrymple decides to make a day of it, bringing her young cousins; her three-year-old twins; her stepdaughter, Belinda; the nursery maid; and her children's nanny, Mrs. Gilpin. But the day soon goes awry when the children's nanny disappears. When Daisy goes to look for her, she finds the body of a stranger, also dressed in a nanny's uniform. Mrs. Gilpin turns up - injured and amnesic. Daisy's husband, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, finds himself embroiled in the investigation of the murdered nanny and Daisy is determined to help.
