The Borghese Gallery

Lying on the outskirts of seventeenth century Rome, the Casina Borghese was described by celebrated diarist John Evelyn as "an Elysium of delight". Comprising twenty rooms across two floors the main floor is dedicated to classical antiquities of the First to Third centuries and the sculptures displayed - including many by Bernini - remain in the actual places they were intended for. This unsurpassed room-by-room guide is supplemented by useful plans allowing visitors to fully appreciate all the paintings and sculptures on display, plus over 100 works in the outstanding archaeological collection. Each work is fully described and complemented by a photograph in which the colours of the original are faithfully reproduced.
