The widow Mrs. Hansen lives with her children in Telemark Norway and runs a guesthouse there. She eagerly awaits the return of her fiancée Ole Kamp, who is a fisherman on the sea. But he doesn't come back from his trip, instead Mrs. Hansen reaches a message in a bottle with a lottery ticket. Even the dubious character Mr. Sandgoist seems to be pursuing his own plans and puts the family under pressure.
