Der Romanzyklus "Die Menschliche Komödie" bietet ein detailliertes Sittengemälde der französischen Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts. Honoré de Balzac schildert mit scharfem analytischen Verstand die Menschen und sozialen Milieus seiner Zeit und gilt als Begründer des soziologischen Romans. Obwohl das Werk nie vollendet wurde, bleibt es eine bedeutende literarische Quelle für das Verständnis der französischen Restaurationsgesellschaft. In seiner zwanzigjährigen Schaffensperiode verfasste Balzac nahezu 100 Romane sowie zahlreiche Erzählungen, Essays und dramatische Stücke.

Most persons have encountered, in certain provinces in France, a number of Chevaliers de Valois. The Valois-Saint-Remy, who descended from Henri II., also came to an end in the famous Lamothe-Valois implicated in the affair of the Diamond Necklace
