Comienza con la supuesta historia real de la familia Kowalski, que pasa siempre sus vacaciones en una aldea austríaca. Con el paso de los veranos, la amistad entre elpequeño Vittorio Kowalski y Anni, lahija de los dueños de la casa rural, se convierte en un primer amor. Sin embargo, todo cambia a causa de un trágico acontecimiento. Los Kowalski abandonan el pueblo precipitadamente para no volver nunca más. Quince años más tarde Vittorio participa en un programa de televisión, en que demuestra cómo se sabe de memoria el clima de esa pequeña y desconocida aldea, cada chubasco y cada rayo de sol que ha caído sobre ella durante esos quince años. El autor-protagonista, que ve el programa, siente entonces la chispa de la curiosidad, que le llevará a buscar a Vittorio y a averiguar su historia, que después relatará en esa novela de la que no leemos ni una línea pero de la que él habla con la periodista cultural. En un interesantísimo juego de espejos, en el que se pierde la perspectiva de qué es realidad y qué ficción, Wolf Haas aprovecha para hablar de literatura, de la relación de la crítica con los autores y sobre todo de un amor imperturbable.
