El protagonista, un humanista activo, hace frente al totalitarismo sin que al final le importe el perder su empleo ni su puesto en la sociedad. Es testigo de la del embrutecimiento generalizado de la sociedad, cuyo índice es el comportamiento fascista de su propia clase escolar.La cinta blanca, de Michael Haneke, mejor película europea del año, versa sobre el mismo asunto: las raíces de la intolerancia en la Alemania anterior al estallido de la II guerra mundial.

Una sutil e irónica denuncia del nazismo escrita en 1930 por uno de los grandes autores de la literatura alemana contemporánea. Subtitulada Novela edificante en tres partes, la obra sigue la pista de tres personajes cuyas vidas se entrecruzan en la Alemania inmediatamente previa al ascenso de Hitler. En el primero y más extenso de estos relatos, el protagonista viaja a Barcelona para asistir a la Exposición Universal del 29, con la idea de convertirse en "moderno". Los otros dos relatos se ocupan de la caída en la prostitución y posterior rescate moral de una amiga suya en Múnich.

Las eras del horror se reconocen, casi siempre, demasiado tarde.

Horváth's setting for this black political farce is a seedy hotel in Central Europe in the 1920s where the only guest is a drunken, ageing nymphomaniac - wealthy and despotic. Under her sole occupancy the hotel is falling apart and sliding even deeper into decadence. There is no future and no hope until a young woman arrives with a fortune to spend. What follows is a riot of confusion and mistaken identities, satirising the despair and futility of a continent poised on the brink of fascism.Horváth (1901-1938) was accidentally killed in Paris after fleeing from the Nazis. The Belle Vue , one of 16 plays, was not performed until 1969. This translation marked the British premiere, in a production by the Actors Touring Company.
