V knize Přítomnost Boha v dějinách představuje Fackenheim svůj koncept „zakládajících zkušeností“ judaismu – společných, znovu zpřítomňovaných zkušeností, jež stvrzují víru v neomezeného Boha, přítomného v omezených lidských dějinách. Tuto víru včetně jejích nevyhnutelných paradoxů považuje za ústřední pro židovství i křesťanství, jež označuje za „dějinná náboženství“. Otázkou dnešního židovství pak je, jak smířit Boha dějin s bezprecedentní událostí holocaustu. Židovství i křesťanství se navíc musí během posledního století vyrovnávat se sekularismem: pokud je biblický Bůh bohem veškerých dějin, musí být i bohem současných sekulárních dějin, a to včetně novodobých katastrof jako je holocaust či Hirošima.
