Ultramarine is the story of Dana Hilliot's first voyage, as mess-boy on the freighter Oedipus Tyrannus bound for Bombay and Singapore: of his struggle to win the approval of his shipmates, trying to match their example in the bars and bordellos of the Chinese ports while at the same time remaining faithful to his first love, Janet, back home in England. Alternating between Dana's own narrative and the ribald humor and colorful language of the sailors' conversation, Ultramarine depicts a boy's initiation into the company of men.

"Dunkel wie die Gruft, in der mein Freund begraben liegt" ist Malcolm Lowrys zweiter großer Roman. Er basiert auf Tagebüchern einer Reise nach Mexiko 1945, wo Lowry mit seiner Frau Margerie die Orte besuchte, an denen er zuvor mit seiner ersten Frau lebte. Das Buch bietet ein schonungsloses Selbstporträt Lowrys und die Entstehungsgeschichte von "Unter dem Vulkan".

Ethan Llewelyn, ein ehemaliger Anwalt aus Wales, reist mit seiner Frau Jacqueline zur Insel Gabriola, die sie als Paradies imaginiert haben. Während der Busfahrt wird Ethan von Erinnerungen an seine traumatische Kindheit, den Selbstmord eines Freundes und den Abbruch seiner Karriere geplagt.

Děj románu klasika angloamerické literatury se odehrává v mexickém městečku roku 1938, v době porážky španělských republikánů na Ebru. Pod vnějším rámcem posledního dne bývalého britského konzula, jenž hledá záchranu v alkoholu, kreslí obraz světa 20. století s hrozbou fašismu a rozpadem západní civilizace. Přeložil František Jungwirth, verše přeložil Jan Zábrana a ty španělské přeložila Pavla Lidmilová.

Jeden deň bývalého konzula plný lásky, alkoholu, znechutenia, sebaľútosti, spomienok a utrpenia. Druhou hlavnou postavou je tu alkohol, ktorý je tu spoločenskou normou, cestou, únikom i záhubou, únikom pred problémami aj ich povodcom... Slovenská mutácia diela nie je zrovna najlepším počinom,prekladateľ Pavel Vilikovský ráta s tým, že čitateľ má nejaké základy zo španielčiny a latiny, nemecké state preložil kurzívou v slovenčine s akcentom – česká verzia to riešila poznámkami pod čiarou, čo knihe dodalo potrebnú atmosféru.

Bajo el volcán relata las últimas horas de un hombre en su descenso moral y físico hacia las profundidades del fracaso y la muerte. Es Día de Muertos y Geoffrey Firmin pasea por las cantinas de Quauhnáhuac mientras dos volcanes, el Popocatépetl y el Iztaccíhuatl, se asoman como trágico recordatorio de la crisis que tiene con Yvonne, quien acaba de regresar a México como último recurso para evitar la caída de su matrimonio y de Firmin, su esposo. En 1947 Malcolm Lowry publicó en lengua inglesa una de las obras fundamentales para las letras mexicanas: Bajo el volcán, una suerte de premonición que deviene en profecía, el relato delirante de un hombre arruinado por el alcohol, de los amantes fuera de su elemento, su Edén... Quauhnáhuac es esa ciudad tempestad -tan real como imaginada- de tabernas para beber hasta la sobriedad, de perros callejeros, de indígenas moribundos, de calles serpenteantes por las que desciende una procesión durante el Día de Muertos.
