Adelantándose a los hermanos Grimm, y a otros recopiladores de cuentos y de canciones populares como Clemens Brentano, Achim von Arnim o Ludwig Tieck, Benedikte Naubert recogió y reescribió leyendas germánicas como las de Genoveva, los Nibelungos, el rey de los Elfos o el flautista de Hamelin, destinadas a un lector popular. Con un gusto muy de la época, que intenta reproducir el supuesto estilo ingenuo, repetitivo y poco artificioso de la narración popular, los cuentos de Benedikte Naubert poseen cierta aspereza y cierta inmediatez, lo que, sin duda, hizo que gustaran al público de su tiempo. A pesar de su copiosa producción literaria, la autora guardó largo tiempo su anonimato y fue descubierta en 1817 gracias a un artículo publicado en un periódico. En cierto modo, se la puede considerar una precursora de la literatura de mujeres, que floreció durante el siglo XIX.
