This book originates from the Final Symposium of the KATO Research Project held at Humboldt University Berlin in 2000. The project, titled “Comparative Analysis of the Transition Process in the Agricultural Sector of Selected Transition Countries,” focused on a comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of institutional change in three key areas: (1) market liberalization, (2) privatization of land and non-land assets, and (3) farm restructuring and reorganization. These topics were explored within the agricultural sectors of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. Beyond research, the project aimed to educate, training twelve junior researchers from Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Germany through an “East-West-Ph.D. Program.” This initiative fostered valuable knowledge exchange and a robust learning environment. Seven years later, all three countries are now EU Member States, and the junior researchers have completed their theses, thriving as senior researchers or professors in various universities across Eastern and Western Europe. While the transition process continues, its dynamics have evolved, with many formal institutional reforms now complete.
