The Vienna-based artist Josef Trattner started his European Sofa Journeys in 2004. For what is now his sixth project in the series, he traveled for an entire month, this time along the Danube river from its two headstreams in Donaueschingen to the Romanian city Tulcea right before the river flows into the Black Sea - always with the portable, self-designed red-foam sofa in tow, on which he invites local artists, writers, and musicians to sit down and talk. The book collects texts the authors were inspired by these encounters to write. Photographs document the journey and the locations of this intervention. Trattner's Sofa Journeys are social experiments that not only bring together various artistic disciplines but also, taken together, form a comprehensive European communication project.

His fifth SOFA/DIVAN project once again takes Josef Trattner to the outer ridges of Europe - this time to Bulgaria or, more precisely, to Sofia, Plovdiv, Ruse, Varna, and Burgas. Young writers barely known beyond the Bulgarian borders sat down on Trattner's sofa, as did musicians, journalists, and filmmakers. The brick-red sofas are constantly moved around in public space, rendering Trattner's interlocutors guests in their own cities. These „Sofa Journeys“ are also accompanied by a mirror, which allows for special interaction with the surrounding architecture (architecture within the sofa). The sofa itself is finally left behind in a selected spot and thus given to the public. It remains in its respective city. New perspectives on familiar places open up for the speakers, blurring the line between public and private space. The „sedentary“ piece of furniture, shouldered by the artist and his writers, becomes a metaphor for their existence. The texts published in this book may take Josef Trattner, the artist, as a point of departure or develop their ideas, fictions, and dreams autonomously and far removed from the „Trattner situation.“

Sein 4. SOFA- / DIVAN-Projekt führt Josef Trattner wieder an die Grenzen Europas – und dieses Mal auch über sie hinaus, nach Istanbul, Samsun, Trabzon, Ankara und Izmir. Wieder hat er im Land seiner Wahl ansässige Künstler, Schriftsteller, Musiker und Architekten eingeladen, auf seinem Sofa zum Dialog Platz zu nehmen und mit ihm und dem gemeinsam geschulterten Möbel aus rotem Schaumstoff die Stadträume zu erkunden. Das neue, nun vorliegende Buch versammelt die Spuren seiner türkischen Reise, seine Fotos und die Texte, die aus den Gesprächen, Begegnungen und Wanderungen entstanden sind. Josef Trattner präsentiert ein neues, riesiges Kapitel seines europäischen Vermittlungsprojekts und öffnet dem Leser einen ganz neuen Zugang zum Verständnis der Intellektuellen, Künstler und Autoren und ihrer Situation in der heutigen Türkei.

Seit zehn Jahren geht Josef Trattner mit seinen selbst entworfenen, aus leichtem Schaumstoff gefertigten Sitzmöbeln auf Sofafahrten. 2013 führte ihn die Reise nach Polen: International bekannte polnische Schriftsteller ebenso wie über die Grenzen Polens hinaus noch wenig rezipierte junge Autoren nahmen auf Trattners Sofa Platz, immer wieder auch Musiker, Journalisten und Fotografen. Trattner gelingt so eine doppelte Vermittlungsleistung zwischen bildender Kunst und Literatur sowie zwischen Bekanntem und (literarischem) Neuland. Die Sofas wechseln ständig ihre Plätze im öffentlichen Raum, wodurch Trattners Gesprächspartner zu Gästen in ihren eigenen Städten werden. Neue Perspektiven auf vertraute Orte erschließen sich den Sprechenden, die Grenze zwischen öffentlichem Raum und Privatem verschwimmt. Das sesshafte Möbel, das der Künstler und seine Autoren schultern, wird zur Metapher ihrer Existenz. Die hier veröffentlichten Texte können von der Begegnung mit der Künstlerfigur Josef Trattner ihren Ausgang nehmen, oder sie entwickeln ganz autonom und weit entfernt von der „Trattnerschen Situation“ ihre Gedanken, Fiktionen und Träume.

Für seine „Sofafahrten“ verwendet Josef Trattner von ihm selbst entworfene, leicht transportable Schaumstoffsofas. Im Sommer 2012 reiste er damit nach Rumänien, traf sich mit ansässigen oder ortskundigen Schriftstellern, führte mit ihnen Gespräche, lud sie zu Sofa-Wanderungen und -Lesungen im öffentlichen Raum ein und dokumentiert nun mit den Texten der Autoren und mit seinen Fotos diese intensive Reise ins Innere eines immer noch unbekannten Landes. Das sesshafte Möbel, das der Künstler und seine Autoren schultern, wird zur Metapher ihrer Existenz. For his ‘Sofa Journeys’ Josef Trattner uses readily transportable foam rubber sofas he designed himself. In the summer of 2012 he travelled to Romania, met up with authors who were either resident or knew the place well, talked with them and invited them to join his sofa-walks and -lectures in public space. He now documents this intense journey through the heart of a still unknown country with contributions by the authors and his own photographs. The sedentary piece of seating, carried by the artist and his authors, becomes a metaphor of their existence.
