This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Flexible Query Answering Systems, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from October 27–29, 2002. FQAS is a leading conference for researchers and practitioners focused on providing intuitive access to information across various needs. The multidisciplinary nature of the conference encompasses fields such as databases, information retrieval, knowledge representation, soft computing, multimedia, and human-computer interaction. Previous conferences took place in 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000, with a consistent theme of developing innovative query systems that enhance access to information from repositories like databases, libraries, and the World Wide Web. Traditional query systems often fall short, and FQAS aims to create more expressive and productive alternatives. The proceedings include 29 original papers addressing user queries and system responses, covering topics such as database management, domain modeling, knowledge representation, artificial intelligence, and multimedia information systems. We extend our gratitude to the contributors for their outstanding work, as well as to the referees, publisher, sponsors, invited speakers, and members of the Advisory Board and Program Committee, whose efforts were crucial to the success of FQAS 2002.
