From the beginning of his career Udo Fries has devoted himself to text linguistics; in the last few years he has compiled a (now practically completed) machine-readable corpus of early English newspapers which will make it possible to combine text linguistics with corpus linguistics in a fruitful way. The festschrift devoted to these two topics contains 17 contributions by colleagues from all over the world.
