A collaborative study (jointly funded by Germany's Hamburg Airport and the State Ministry of Economic Affairs) of the regional economic effects on second-tier airports of liberalization of bilateral agreements in the EU market. Liberalization has intensified competition among regions and has increased the volume of direct intercontinental flights, but at the same time has driven many of those flights out of regions with second-tier non-hub airports.
