Evolutionary computation (EC) techniques are efficient, nature-inspired methods for planning and optimization, grounded in natural evolution and genetics principles. Their simplicity and effectiveness make them suitable for a wide range of problems in optimization, problem-solving, and machine learning. A growing number of researchers and practitioners are applying EC techniques across various domains. This book presents a curated selection of relevant EC applications alongside detailed examinations of techniques for effective implementation. The included papers showcase the current state of the art in EC applications, aiming to inspire researchers and practitioners to develop efficient EC methods for design and problem-solving. All contributions were presented at EvoWorkshops 2005, which featured a diverse array of workshops focused on application-oriented aspects of EC. Since its inception in 1999, the EvoWorkshops format has successfully represented advances in EC applications. Over the years, it has evolved into a major event dedicated to the practical application of EC, distinguishing itself from larger conferences by concentrating solely on application aspects and bridging the gap between EC research and its application across various domains.
